Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Congress is racing to pass legislation to raise the debt limit and prevent a default, after House Republicans and the White House clinched an agreement Saturday night following intense negotiations.
  • The congressional hearing schedule is relatively light, as the House was originally scheduled to be in recess this week.
  • BakerHostetler’s Legislative Seminar is one week from tomorrow, featuring leading policymakers from both parties and both chambers of Congress. Join us!

HOUSE

  • The House will vote tonight on noncontroversial financial services legislation, taking up the Fiscal Responsibility Act tomorrow before departing for the originally scheduled recess.

SENATE

  • The Senate will begin its week with votes on judicial nominees before taking up the debt limit bill late in the week.
  • The Senate Banking Committee tomorrow will hold a hearing on countering China, with senior officials from the Treasury and Commerce departments.
  • The Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on electric reliability.
  • Additional Senate committee meetings can be found here.

WHITE HOUSE

  • The White House will be working throughout the week to ensure Democratic support for President Joe Biden’s debt limit deal.
  • Biden will travel to Colorado to deliver the commencement address at the United States Air Force Academy on Thursday.
