The Dean of the Melbourne Law School (MLS) has written to confirm the passing of Professor Harold Luntz on 29 January 2025.

Professor Michelle Foster noted that Professor Luntz was a highly respected and much-loved member of the MLS community.  A global expert on torts law, from 1986 to 1988 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law. Until his retirement at the end of 2002, he held the George Paton Chair of Law. Thereafter as an Emeritus Professor he continued until 2008 to teach in the postgraduate program.

The Harold Luntz Graduate Research Thesis Prize is named in recognition of his many contributions to MLS.

Of course many in private practice will remember his published works on Assessment of damages for personal injury and death. The most recent (5th) edition was written with Sirko Harder (now of the University of Sussex) and is published by Lexis Nexis.
