He sat in his room
watching the computer screen
and saw the world go by.
The images of death and destruction
were too much to take,
and he got up and went outside.
He got in the car
and traveled to the office
to find respite;
but instead found more of the same.
He saw the sunshine men
and the golden women
and the entitled kids
going to the store
and to school
and riding cars
isolated from the other people.
The confused old men
and the sad old women
waited at the bus stop
and sat on benches
in the heat.
What did the sunshine men
think?
They were cable TV students
and political junkies,
spending their lives
worrying about everyone but themselves.
He wondered why the sunshine men
spent their lives
in dark rooms
hidden away from the real people.
He wanted to live in the sunshine.
But, he didn’t want to be a sunshine man.
He would go outside
and bask in the real thing.
