Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced President Trump’s intent to nominate Jonathan McKernan as the Undersecretary of Domestic Finance. The press release states that McKernan’s continued service at Treasury “will ensure that his experience and expertise are best put to advancing the President’s America First agenda.”
McKernan, who has been serving as an advisor at the Treasury Department, has played a pivotal role in Secretary Scott Bessent’s senior team while awaiting Senate confirmation to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The White House has confirmed it will now withdraw McKernan’s nomination to lead the CFPB.
McKernan’s career includes serving on the Board of Directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and holding senior positions at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the U.S. Senate, and the Treasury Department. Prior to his government service, he was an attorney specializing in banking and consumer finance laws.
