Scammers posing as legal aid target individuals seeking legal services

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) was made aware of a scam involving scam callers calling and texting individuals seeking legal services. Scammers claim they need to discuss details about legal services and demand payment. Scam calls come from fraudulent numbers not associated with TRLA.

Those contacted by a number claiming to be legal aid whether through text message or phone call are being reminded by TRLA that the organization does not charge for legal services and does not ask for bank account details or credit card information.

According to Joseph Resurreccion, director of Information and Technology at TRLA, the scammers have manipulated search engine results so when entering the fraudulent phone numbers into a search engine like Google, the official trla.org website shows alongside the numbers.

“The best way to verify that a call or text message is truly from TRLA is to contact us directly,” he said. “If you have doubts about a message or phone call claiming to be from TRLA, hang up and call our hotline at 956-996-8752, or visit www.trla.org using your web browser.”

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid encourages the public to avoid sharing personal or financial information with unsolicited callers or texters.
