A California company is recalling candies imported from India because they contain unsafe levels of lead.
Bavan Food Company, based in Sacramento, issued a recall of its Sugar Rewari candy after tests by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) determined the candies contained as much as 1.2 parts per million of lead. California considers candies with lead levels of 0.10 ppm or higher to be contaminated. Eight months ago, the company recalled the same candy after tests indicated it contained .26 parts per million of lead.
The candies, which are light brown, oval shaped and visible through the package, are sold in 10.5-ounce, clear plastic bags with an orange border. The candy is labeled with three different names, all printed in orange and white print: BAVAN Brand Sugar Rewari, BAVAN Brand Sugar Reori, or BAVAN brand Sugar Redoi.
Pregnant women and parents of children who may have consumed this candy should contact their physician or health care provider to determine if medical testing is needed. The symptoms of lead poisoning are: nausea, cramping, headache, muscle weakness, and diarrhea.
