An Ohio-based meat company has recalled an unknown amount of beef products that may contain spinal cord and vertebral column, which under state and federal regulations must be removed from beef from cattle over 30 months of age due to the potential for the infective agent that causes Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).
Valley Farm Meats of Strasburg, Ohio was informed of the problem following a routine inspection by the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Meat Inspection. There are no reports of illness associated with eating the beef. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service considers this type of potential contamination as a low health risk.
The company is recalling all beef products produced from Jan. 28 and July 5 and offered for sale through July 11. The package labels or beef carcasses may bear the Ohio mark of inspection and “Est. 80,” however products processed through another company — Ed Lind Livestock and Poultry — may not contain such markings.
Customers who have purchased the meats should not eat them and may return them to Valley Farm Meats in Strasburg during regular business hours, or call the company at 330-878-5557.
