A California grocery-store chain is recalling bags of organic baby spinach after a random sample test by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) showed that one bag was positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Inc. of El Segundo, CA said the recalled bags, which might still be in customers’ homes, had an “enjoy by” date of August 1 and were sold in its retail stores in California, Nevada and Arizona.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the bagged spinach.
The recalled organic baby spinach was sold in 5 oz. (142 g) bags under the f&e™ label. The barcode is 20001162.
Customers may return the empty product bag or present the receipt as proof of purchase of the recalled product to any Fresh & Easy store for a full refund. The spinach should be immediately disposed.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
