When it comes to describing and dissecting California law, sometimes it feels like you’re in a whole other country. As the California Peculiarities Employment Law Blog describes it, “most of the country, 2 + 2 predictably equals 4.  In California, sometimes the results are surprising.” Luckily, that same blog is always there to address those issues in an appealing way.

As the California Peculiarities Employment Law Blog approaches an issue they make sure it’s from a fresh angle even if it’s a niche subject. When it comes to making sense of California’s law, this blog charges forward, which is probably one of the reasons they made this year’s ABA Journal’s Blawg 100. Continuing our series where we talk to LexBlog Network members who made the Blawg 100, we talk to Seyfarth Shaw LLP’s Colleen Regan, the founder and co-manager of the blog.

We started the blog as a fun, practical way to discuss the really important, yet peculiar, challenges of California employment law.  The blog is geared toward HR professionals, company executives and in-house counsel.  Our goal is to inform them, while presenting practical solutions to common problems they face.  We wanted to find a way of taking issues that can be pretty straight-laced and–let’s face it–a little dull and spicing them up so people actually want to read about them.

Why do you enjoy blogging? What’s most rewarding?
We are thrilled when we can make employment law more interesting for our audience.  It is rewarding when readers say they finally comprehend a concept that was presented in an overly-complicated way by someone else.  And it is really fun to draft catchy titles!

Why do you think you made it on the Blawg 100? What sets you apart?
California employment law is complicated and clients are always looking for ways to learn about it that won’t put them to sleep.  As recently characterized by Above-the-Law, our blog succeeds in “blending niche-oriented writing with colorful accessible language” to elucidate California law and workplace trends.   We also draw from our attorney ranks a large stable of regular bloggers, a small group of savvy editors, and an even smaller group of senior employment attorneys who take a final pass at each post.  This helps to ensure accuracy and consistency of the Cal-Peculiarities style.

What’s the biggest challenge you have in blogging?
Keeping it fresh and fun every time, even when topics are neither.
