Today in Legal Artificial Intelligence

Quote of the day from “The Week,” pop star will.i.am (really!?!) says “(AI) is all about preparing for tomorrow. No one wants to play catch up.” “Artificial intelligence will be more disruptive to the UK technology sector than Brexit.”

  • Check out always insightful Ron Friedman’s take on some of the data from Altman Weil’s latest Law Firms in Transition survey. Appropriately considered within the unique realities of your firm, these analyses are directly applicable to your firm’s planning. (Ron even mentions the AI question!)

  • I am often asked how what law firms should be doing now re AI. One of my safest answers is to learn what AI is and develop some opinions as to how it can bring value to your clients. Then publish those ideas so your clients see that you get it. More and more law firms are doing so. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t see a publication of this sort by a law firm. Here are a couple from this morning:

Baker McKenzie, Wolters Kluwer, Slaughter & May (This white paper by Slaughter & May about the “responsible deployment of AI in business” is definitely worth a read.)

Salesforce does this sort of publishing a lot, and they do it very well (i.e., the content is useful). Here’s their latest, positing that AI’s decades of fits and starts are over and that today’s momentum will be maintained.

  • Here’s a good summary by the Adobe Retail Team regarding how retailers are (and should be) personalizing the sales experience. Elonide Semmes often argues that this is where professional service firms should be headed as well.
  • AI is legit! So says the latest issue of “CIO Applications.” They list their Top 25 AI Solution Providers.
  • The Washington Post suggests that Hopper, Kayak and Hipmunk use AI to actually make your travel a bit less painful.
  • This brief but interesting thought piece argues, “the truth is there is no AI, just super-fast computers.” And it hints at the huge leap true AI may bring someday.
  • Please trust me on this. This article on the epistemology of AI is really interesting. Really. It reframes in very interesting ways some aspects of AI that we talk about a lot. Something to get your brain working one last time before heading into the weekend. 😉
