There Is Nothing Trivial About Spinal Cord Injuries

The human body is an amazing feat of biological functionality. It combines a plethora of very different, very complex biological activities into one organism that is capable of great thought and action. However that biological versatility comes at a price, and that price is that we are far from indestructible. Because we have so many complex, interconnected systems, any damage to one of those systems can have a serious impact on our daily lives.

Nowhere is this more apparent than the possible negative consequences that arise from a spinal cord injury.

A Bundle Of Nerves

Our bodies can be impressively efficient in a number of ways, the organization of our nervous system is one of them. The nervous system does double duty for us, allowing us to receive and interpret sensations like hot, cold, soft or hard, as well as issue “orders” to our body, like pick up an object, or walk to the fridge. In other words, the nervous system is a control system for allowing us to perceive and understand world, then take the action to interact with it.

The nervous system is a series of organic “wires” that need to embed themselves throughout every part of the human body. But the nervous system has one single point of origin; the brain. This is where all the data that is inputted and outputted goes. So, at the “starting point,” every single nerve begins at the brain, which results in a very large collection of nerves.

This collection or “bundle” of nerves then moves down from the bottom of our brain and spreads to every other part of the body, branching off where it needs to go. That bundle is known as the spinal cord, as the nerves start from the brain and make their way down, eventually ending at the tips of our toes.

Injuries Are Serious

This means that any injury to the spinal cord can have major, potentially lifelong ramifications depending on where that injury occurred. If an injury to the spinal cord occurs just above the waist, for example, it may mean a person loses the ability to walk, and is now confined to a wheelchair. If the person receives a spinal cord injury to the neck, he or she may lose all mobility from neck downwards, and spend the rest of his or her life in a bed, unable to even move hands to use a phone or TV remote control.

Get The Right Kind Of Help

This is why, if you, or someone you know, gets into an accident that results in some kind of spinal cord injury, it should always be taken very seriously. This is even more important if the injury was the result of another person’s carelessness or negligence.

If you, or someone you know is permanently affected by a spinal cord injury, get professional legal help from people with experience in spinal cord injury cases. Such lifelong injuries deserve appropriate compensation, and the people who did it should be held responsible for their actions.
