SARASOTA FL – FHP reported one person died after being involved in a 4-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on Interstate 75.

The accident happened as a 22 year old man from Naples was driving a sport utility vehicle north on I-75 in Sarasota County near mile marker 189NB.

The SUV was being followed by 3 other vehicles;  a sport utility vehicle driven by a 49 year old man from North Port, a van driven by a 40 year old man from Coral Gables, and  another sport utility vehicle driven by a 41 year old man from Port Charlotte.

At 4:37:00 PM the SUV driven by the Port Charlotte man crashed into the rear of the van.

After being hit from behind the van driven by the man from Coral Gables was forced into the rear of the SUV driven by the man from North Port. That SUV was in tern, forced forward hard enough to crash into the rear of the SUV driven by the 22 year old man from Naples.

After crashing into the rear of the van the SUV which initiated the crash swerved off the roadway toward the right side and crashed into multiple trees and bushes along side the highway.

The driver was thrown from the SUV and sustained severe injuries.

A Bay Flight medical helicopter transported the injured man to Sarasota Memorial for treatment where he was pronounced deceased.

No other drivers or passengers were injured in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation.
