Ransomware attacks are on the rise, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you or someone you know is unfortunate enough to be the victim of ransomware, part of the recovery process is to identify the specific strain of ransomware. Knowing what ransomware you are dealing with helps to determine which decryption tools may be available and what data the ransomware attacks. There are several free decryption tools available on the internet.

But how do you know what ransomware “landed” on your machine? When ransomware encrypts your data, it changes the file extension. Tech Viral has a listing for some of the most famous and common encrypted file extensions. It’s really scary to see how many extensions are on the list. By my count, there are almost 200 of them. Make sure you have good backups of your data and you shouldn’t have a need to use the list.
