Mechanics liens are a powerful tool to help secure payment on Illinois projects. In turbulent economic times, liens can be particularly useful to architects, engineers, and contractors concerned about their clients’ willingness – or ability – to pay for design and construction services. Liens can sometimes motivate project owners and lenders to pay for design and construction services. Claimants who meet certain short deadlines, and make technical filings with correct content, can often receive favorable treatment under the Illinois Mechanics Lien Act. However, liens are no panacea, and they have potential downside along with their upside.

In this one-hour program, Jeremy Baker, a design and construction attorney, a longtime partner at Schiff Hardin LLP, and the recent founder of Baker Law – Design & Construction Counsel, will help you understand:

  • What is a mechanics lien?
  • How can liens help you get paid?
  • What impact will COVID-19 have on projects and liens?
  • How do project owners and lenders react to mechanics liens?
  • What risks to claimants face if they make – or forego – lien claims?
  • What are the different kinds of liens, and their filing requirements?
  • How much do lien claims cost, and what happens when they are filed?
  • Given COVID-19, what lien-related issues should you consider?

Jeremy will take questions after the program. NOTE: This Program is specific to Illinois law and Illinois projects.
