With thanks to Anne-Maree Kelly for drawing my attention to the Inquest into the death of Gregory Masters, available on the Coroners Court NSW website.

In relation to the restraint issue, the Coroner accepted that a doctor’s decision to restrain Mr Masters was correct and that proper arrangements were made so that restraint could occur in the shortest period possible to achieve the clinical goal of sedation (at [102]).

The Coroner commented on the manner of restraint and training in respect of positional asphyxia, noting at [128] ff revised NSW Health policies and amended training programs. However the relevant finding was that on the balance of probabilities, the restraint was not a contributing cause of death (at [144]).
