Elsa H. Jumlail Jr. (Philippine Association of Social Workers, Western Mindanao State University) recently published her Article, Exploring the Experiences and Effects of Polygamous Marriages on Community Women in Zamboanga City, Philippines, on SSRN.
The Abstract is as follows:
This study aimed to explore the experiences of women in polygamous marriages and identify the issues and challenges they face. The community development profession can play an important role in addressing the issues and challenges faced by women and children in this setting by working with community members, policymakers, and other stakeholders to promote more equitable and inclusive family structures that support the well-being of all members of the community. The study used a descriptive-qualitative research design, and data were collected through surveys and in-depth interviews with women in polygamous marriages. The study found that women in this type of marriage faced a range of issues and challenges, including economic abuse, emotional neglect, and social isolation. Moreover, children may also experience a range of emotions, including jealousy, resentment, and confusion. Polygamous marriage is a complex issue that requires further research and policy formulation to address the issues and challenges faced by women and children in such marriages. It is important to respect the personal choices of individuals while also ensuring that their rights are protected.
