The Chicago Bar Association unequivocally stands in steadfast support of Jenner & Block. Like the Chicago Bar Association, Jenner & Block is a Chicago institution, and it is one of the finest law firms in our city and in the world. Founded more than 100 years ago, Jenner & Block has a rich and storied history of championing legal causes big and small, advocating for clients from a broad range of political, social, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and importantly, being a stalwart champion of legal aid and pro bono work, which has worked to aid countless Americans.
This most recent Executive Order targeting Jenner & Block based on its representation of clients in matters adverse to members of the current Administration, similar to one already enjoined by a federal court, violates the fundamental tenets of our nation’s legal system, including the core principle that every person is entitled to legal counsel.
The Chicago Bar Association does not view standing for the rule of law as a political or partisan issue, but rather a fundamental issue of respecting the rule of law. Any attempts to intimidate or punish lawyers for representing and advocating for their clients violate the rule of law, a historical cornerstone of our democracy. We encourage fellow members of the legal profession and the general public to honor and defend the Constitution and the rule of law and support the essential role of the legal profession in our society.
