outbreak alert

The FDA continues to investigate foodborne illness outbreaks and has updated patient numbers for several. The agency has also closed one investigation.

The outbreak updates will cease after this week because of the government shutdown.

For an outbreak of Salmonella Anatum traced to frozen sprouted beans, the Food and Drug Administration has determined the outbreak to be over. A total of 13 people from 11 states were confirmed as patients in the outbreak. Four of them required hospitalization. They became ill beginning in October 2024 and continuing until August this year.

As a result of the outbreak, on July 16 this year Chetak LLC Group initiated a recall for multiple lots of frozen Deep-brand Sprouted Mat (Moth) and Moong (Mung) beans in 1-pound (454 g) packages.

On Aug. 22, FDA expanded advice for retailers and consumers to not eat, sell, or serve Deep-brand Premium Select Frozen SURTI UNDHIU MIX in 12-ounce (340 g) packages with the lot code printed on the back side of the bag of IN25158K and Use By date of 06 Dec 2026.

On September 8, 2025, Chetak LLC Group expanded the recall to include several lots of various Deep-brand frozen products.

The FDA first posted information about the outbreak on July 9.

Other outbreak investigations

For an outbreak of Listeria infections the FDA has updated its advisory to include ready-to-eat pasta meals sold at Trader Joe’s stores. Previously the FDA had posted recalls by Walmart, Albertsons and Kroger. Five people have died in the outbreak.

As of Sept. 25, a total of 20 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from 15 states. Nineteen of the patients have been hospitalized. The FDA first reported the outbreak on April 9.

On Sept. 25, the supplier of the affected pasta, Nate’s Fine Foods Inc., recalled certain lots of pre-cooked pasta including fettucine, linguine, and farfalle (bowtie), after a sample of linguine pasta collected and tested by FreshRealm tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Nate’s Fine Foods Inc. does not sell affected products direct to retail. The firm is working with the FDA and their customers to determine if additional recalls are needed.

For an outbreak of Salmonella Lomalinda the patient count has increased from 35 to 37 in the past week. The FDA has not reported the patients’ ages or where they live. The source of the pathogen has not yet been determined but the FDA has begun traceback. The agency has not reported what food is being traced. The FDA first reported the outbreak on Sept. 17.

For an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections, the patient count has increased to 26, up from 25 a week ago. The FDA has not reported the patients’ ages or where they live.
