Federal enforcement of fraud involving taxpayer-funded programs, like Medicare, is intensifying and businesses that work with the US government should be paying close attention. The US Department of Justice’s latest guidance is designed to accelerate qui tam investigations, increase the role of whistleblowers and strengthen coordination across government agencies. Combined with a record-breaking $6.8 billion recovered under the False Claims Act in 2025, the direction of travel is clear: enforcement is becoming faster, more coordinated and increasingly data-driven. For companies operating in areas such as health care, government contracting, defense, infrastructure and customs, now is the time to reassess compliance programs and internal controls. Squire Patton Boggs attorneys Lauren Briggerman and Lauryn Durham explore the DOJ’s evolving approach, the Shumate Memo and what companies should be considering in response, which you can read on the SPB Global Investigations and Compliance Review blog, available here.
