Cigna and OpenAI Collaborate on AI Support for Cancer Care

On September 23, the Cigna Group announced a collaboration with OpenAI to develop more personalized support for patients with complex conditions, initially focusing on cancer care. The initiative will integrate OpenAI’s artificial intelligence capabilities into Cigna’s clinical workflows and patient-facing services.

One of the first planned capabilities would help oncology nurses and case managers at Cigna Healthcare and Accredo Specialty Pharmacy consolidate clinical, pharmacy, behavioral and benefits information. The goal is to identify emerging patient needs and coordinate support between appointments, when treatment side effects, new symptoms and questions may arise. Patient-reported information, including treatment side effects and questions about accessing care, would also help inform that support.

Cigna stated that AI-generated information will remain subject to human oversight and that clinicians will retain responsibility for patient care and clinical decision-making. The company also stated that OpenAI will not retain patient or member data or use it to train its models.

The collaboration reflects the growing use of AI in care management and patient support, while emphasizing the continued importance of clinical oversight and patient privacy.
