I recently authored an article for HR.com discussing the U.S. Department of State’s indefinite pause on immigrant visa appointments and what it means for employers and HR teams. The pause affects individuals pursuing U.S. permanent residence through consular processing abroad, while temporary nonimmigrant visas and adjustment of status applications handled by USCIS within the United States remain unaffected.
As I explain in the article, the good news for employers is that most employment-based green card cases are processed through adjustment of status applications filed from within the U.S. However, HR professionals with employees awaiting rescheduled immigrant visa appointments are likely to face difficult questions about timing, expectations and next steps.
I outline practical actions HR teams can take now to prepare for employee concerns and communicate effectively with affected workers. I also note that the appointment pause, combined with a stricter public charge standard and expanded officer discretion, signals a more challenging path to permanent residence. Proactive planning and clear communication can help employers support their employees and protect their talent pipelines during this period of uncertainty.
