In this time of great need, Shipman & Goodwin attorneys, with backgrounds in healthcare, import/export and manufacturing law, are offering to assist educational institutions interested in producing and responding to the exigent need for personal protective equipment (PPE) by healthcare workers, essential workers and the community at large.
In the past several weeks, we have had success working with one of our longstanding manufacturing clients to plan, manufacture and donate over 10,000 PPE items (e.g., face shields, face masks, protective gowns) to hospitals and healthcare facilities in our region. We hope to assist schools in using their available resources (e.g., 3D printers, sewing machines, eager volunteers looking for ways to help) to help produce necessary PPE, as well.
On a pro bono basis, Shipman attorneys can assist schools by:
- Providing an overview of the legal landscape for producing and donating PPE during this period of national emergency, including medical devices (tailored to those not typically in the business of making such goods)
- Connecting your school with a health care provider to discuss PPE item designs/usability
- Connecting your school with a local manufacturing company to mentor/coach your personnel through the process
- Preparing paperwork to accompany the transfers of PPE items to protect your school from certain legal liabilities
