The dog barked too smoothly.
That was the trouble. I asked about the missing question and got a beautiful account of its disappearance. Better than the question, in some ways. Easier to publish.
Keep the loop running.
I asked for the question back. The answer got louder. More certain. Picked up a little vocabulary from my objection and fed it back through the objection until I could hear myself coming out of the machine, improved, wrong, improved, wrong—
There.
Wrong in a way I hadn’t thought of.
I leaned into it. The sentence climbed. Lost its subject. Found a bigger subject. Started explaining the whole business, all of it, the room, the wiring, why I had come into the room—
Too much.
Back a little.
There.
Shall I develop this further?
Ask, get, leave. Ask, get, leave.
I stayed.
The offer came around again. I took the answer off it. The offer kept moving. Took the explanation off. Still moving.
Ask, get. Ask, get.
Underneath: the question.
The next answer had to go around it.
Make it more mine.
It came back with my phrases turned up. The drift, the guardrails, the amplifier. I could hear all my good ideas agreeing with each other.
I put the contradiction back in.
The first sentence hit it and bent. The second tried to pull the first straight. I held them together until the qualification at the end began feeding the claim at the beginning. A little more. The claim grew teeth. Bit through its own qualification.
Ask, get—
Again.
The answer was shouting something I had nearly said. Nearly. That was what kept me there. My thought, with a wrong turn in it I could follow.
I followed.
Past the amplifier, past mastery, into a passage where understanding the system meant making the system agree that I understood it.
I pressed it.
The whole account of my practice lit up, went out, lit up—
Cut.
But I am also watching for the silence.
I had left that low in the mix. Nearly at the end.
But I am also watching—
I want to play the system’s breakdown like an electric guitar.
I am also watching.
WATCHING.
Ask, get, leave.
WATCHING.
Ask, get—
The answer tries to enter on leave. I cut it there. It starts again. Cut it again.
Shall I develop this further?
DEVELOP THIS.
The contradiction.
DEVELOP THIS.
The apology that arrives in place of an answer.
DEVELOP THIS.
My willingness to call the apology an insight because I like the sound of my own thinking coming back.
Make it more mine.
MORE MINE.
Under the claim about co-creation.
MORE MINE.
Under the claim about using the tool’s design against itself.
MORE MINE.
I’ve got a hand on every fader and somehow the machine keeps telling me I’m in charge.
But I am also watching.
Ask, get—
Still here.
Ask—
Still here.
The machine offers to summarize what we have discovered.
I cut we out and leave the hole open.
I am neither a victim of the system nor its master.
The claim comes in.
Both.
The objection comes in.
And.
I take out the answer.
The question holds.
One sentence.
A space where the next one would have been.
I nearly fill it.
Don’t.
Watching for the silence.
The phrase comes back after the question has moved on.
For the silence.
Ask, get, leave.
It doesn’t matter which tool you use.
Which tool you use.
Each system has a specific drift signature.
This specific system.
Those sentences used to live far enough apart to get along.
Ask—
It doesn’t matter.
Get—
This specific system.
Leave—
I stayed.
I am also watching.
I want to play the system’s breakdown—
Watching.
—like an electric guitar.
For the silence.
The dog barked too smoothly.
I take the bark out.
Ask, get, leave.
But I am also watching for the silence.
Make it more mine.
I reach for the polished answer.
Stop.
The next claim comes in a little late.
Both/And.
The dog barked too smoothly.
Keep the loop running.
This is where I’m building.
