Australia law blogs: New Melbourne-based trade marks law blogger speaks

Nicholas Weston’s Australian Trade Marks Law Blog is the latest addition to our growing number of international blogs, and the first from a client based out of Australia.

But Nicholas Weston isn’t just the name of the firm – it’s also the name of the Melbourne-based attorney who founded it, who focuses his practice on commercial law, contracts and trade mark issues. Nick and his firm are also active in the Melbourne community, and recently helped launched the not-for-profit group Karma Currency.

To coincide with the launch of his blog last week, I got in touch with Nick to ask him the standard set of questions we pose to the majority of our newest law bloggers. His answers are below.

1. Rob La Gatta: When and how did the development of this blog come about?

Nick Weston: We are a niche firm that practices practical implementation of thought leadership. We needed a way to communicate with US law firms and trademark attorneys.

We use state of the art technology to deliver our services, why not our marketing too?

  • A blog is a great way of communicating what we are good at without the hard sell;
  • it is congruent with our values of transparency and open lines of communication;
  • it presented an opportunity to collaborate with some of the best minds in Australian trade marks and domain names (like Professor Mark Davison and The Hon Neil Brown QC);
  • its ROI metrics are measurable;
  • the LexBlog product looks excellent;
  • there are no other blogs focused on Australian trade marks;
  • it just made sense.

2. Rob La Gatta: What do you hope to get out of your LexBlog blog?

Nick Weston: It is just a way of communicating with US practitioners that we are a “brands” centric Australian firm with certain core strengths delivered around that. We hope to be the ‘go-to’ Australian trade marks practice for US lawyers and trademark attorneys needing representation in Australia. For example, we hope to pick up the Australian end of problematic Madrid applications.

3. Rob La Gatta: If you read other blogs, what are some of your favorites?

Nick Weston:

    • Inchoate
    • Lawfont
    • China Law Blog
    • IPKat
