Hard-cooked eggs that could be contaminated with Listeria are being recalled, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service reported Friday, although there’s been no announcement posted to the general public by the Food and Drug Administration, which has jurisdiction over the product.

FSIS, in announcing the recall of julienne meat salads containing hard-cooked eggs, said eggs (a product inspected by the FDA) had tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes and were being recalled by Michael Foods Egg Products Co.

In Grand Rapids, MI, Spartan Stores announced a recall of eight deli products containing hard-cooked eggs recalled by Michael Foods. The deli products, with sell-by dates of Jan. 20 through Feb. 1, include egg spread, sandwich with egg spread, small and large chef container salads, seven layer and seven layer no-meat container chef salads, and small and large no-meat container chef salads. In West Michigan, the recalled products were sold at D&W and Family Fare.

In an internal memo to institutions and other establishments it supplies, Sysco Quality Assurance said it had been notified that Michael Foods Inc. was recalling hard-cooked eggs “due to a presumptive positive for Listeria monocytogenes in specific lots of products.”

In Illinois, the Courier News reported that after students at Streamwood High School in the Elgin School District were served salad containing hard-cooked eggs Thursday, school administrators were notified of “a nationwide precautionary recall of GFS-brand hard-cooked eggs.”

Vendor Michael Foods told the district that lab testing showed the eggs could be contaminated with Listeria, and that no illnesses had been reported, according to the news report.

Distributor US Foods issued an alert reporting that Michael Foods Inc. of Minnetonka, MN has issued a Class I recall on three lots of Papetti’s Brand hard-cooked eggs in 25 lb. tubs: “The product was widely distributed to the food service sector during the second week of January. Product testing revealed the possible presence of Listeria. No illnesses have been reported. The recalled product may be identified by lot codes 1362W, 1363W, and 1364W with use-by dates of Feb. 11, 12 and 13.”
