This week, floating cities, art galleries and the upcoming long weekend’s impact on hospitality made headlines. Here are 5 New Miami highlights from the news this past week.

Floating city for Biscayne Bay?

Miami Today reported that a Dutch developer is considering Biscayne Bay as the site for a $200 million floating island development with luxury housing, offices, schools, hotels and shopping. The floating waterfront development is described as a fantastic attraction that would mean very high-end real estate.

Pérez Art Museum Miami construction nearing finish line

The highly anticipated new art museum designed by world-renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron is on schedule to open in December. Coupled with the neighboring Patricia and Philip Frost Museum of Science, also underway, these projects are set to bolster Miami’s reputation as an arts and culture destination.

Labor Day travel expected to reach 5-year high

Following summer’s solid growth in room rates and occupancy, South Florida hoteliers from South Beach to the Keys are hoping the holiday will bring a strong start to what is typically a slow month.

Brickell rivals downtown as a prestige address for law firms

In 1973, Brickell was still a sleepy commercial strip with a few high rises. Today, big law firms are split between downtown Miami and the Brickell area.
