Today’s Remaking News of the Week: Harvard’s latest case study reports on Lexoo, a NewLaw business legal services provider, and latest in a long line of law-related enterprises studied by Harvard academics.

As far as I can judge David Maister wrote Harvard Business School’s first case study on a law firm in 1983, Bennett, Strang & Farris. David was the trail-blazer of a treasure trove of work on the economics, strategy, culture and evolution of law firms and the legal services industry.   

Others who have followed in David Maister’ footsteps include Ashish Nanda, Heidi Gardner, Jay Lorsch, David Wilkins and many others from Harvard’s Business and Law Schools.

The subjects include Axiom (the early 2000s pioneer of NewLaw), SeyfarthLean (the Lean Six Sigma-based consultancy are of Seyfarth Shaw), Allen & Overy and Linklaters (two of London’s Magic Circle), Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz (noted for the highest revenue per lawyer and profit per partner of any law firm), Slater & Gordon (the world’s first stock-exchange listed law firm), Uria Menendez (the leading law firm in the Spain-speaking world) and the collapsed firms of Howrey (US) and Heenan Blaikie (Canada).
