On October 13, 2022, the Illinois Department of Insurance (the “Department”) issued Company Bulletin 2022-16 (the “Bulletin”).  The Bulletin is addressed to all domestic insurers and advises that the Department will now participate in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Climate Risk Disclosure Survey (the “Survey”).

The purpose of the Survey is to promote transparency regarding how insurers manage climate-related risks.  Insurers with written premium of at least $100 million are required to participate. The deadline to submit the Survey is November 30, 2022 for companies that have previously participated in the Survey in a different state.  For those companies who have not participated, the next submission is due August 20, 2023, which covers the 2022 reporting year.

Illinois now joins California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washing in requiring participation in the Survey.

The Bulletin can be accessed here.
