If you’ve ever seen TV commercials for life insurance settlement companies like Abacus Life, Coventry Direct, Lighthouse, or Harbor Life Settlements, you may have wondered: is it a scam? The idea of selling your policy for a lump sum can sound too good to be true, but it’s not necessarily fraudulent. In fact, for the right person, using brokers may offer real benefits.

So is there an upside and a downside to working with a broker? Before you choose, it helps to understand how these transactions actually work — and why your life insurance policy is seen as an investment by the companies looking to buy it.

It’s not for everybody

One benefit of working with life insurance settlement companies is the opportunity to receive a cash payout now instead of paying premiums on a policy you no longer need. For some, that immediate relief can be worthwhile.

But the value of your policy to a buyer is often much less than the death benefit your beneficiaries would receive. You may owe taxes on the sale, lose Medicaid eligibility, or face monthly fees — especially if you have a structured settlement, took out a loan against your policy, or don’t get a full lump sum upfront. And while these companies are legal and regulated, they’re also in business to earn a return. That means reselling your policy as an investment to someone else.

Sometimes the broker you deal with (like Abacus or Coventry) will buy your life insurance policy and hold it as part of their investment portfolio. If the eventual payout exceeds what they’ve spent on the purchase and premiums, they make a profit. Other times, however, they sell to another buyer (a hedge fund, private investor, or pension fund), and take a commission or fee.

Either way, the policy becomes an investment, and the profit comes from the difference between what the buyer spends (your lump sum + future premiums) and the death benefit they eventually collect.

That’s why understanding your policy is so important. A quick lump sum might sound appealing, but it’s worth comparing the long-term benefits you may be giving up, especially if your policy still has value for your family.

What is for everybody…

No matter your age or the size of your policy, everyone can benefit from a life insurance policy review. An independent third party — such as a life insurance consultant or expert — can walk you through your existing coverage and identify any life insurance policy gaps, problems, or updates that may better align with your current goals.

This is especially important if it’s been years since you first purchased your policy. Your health may have changed, your financial situation may be different, and your family’s needs may have evolved. So before you work with a broker, take a moment to review what your policy is really worth to you and your family.
