On March 11, 2026, a coalition of seventeen states, led by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, filed a lawsuit, Massachusetts v. U.S. Department of Education, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, alleging that the U.S. Department of Education’s new Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) survey component—the “Admissions and Consumer Transparency Supplement”—violates federal law and places unprecedented burdens on institutions of higher education.
