A male passenger on Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition died after going overboard off the east coast of Scotland. A search and rescue operation led by the coast guard and the Scottish police found a body by Friday evening, August 21. Police say the victim’s family was notified.
The Ambition was on the final day of its 13-night Iceland cruise, which departed Dundee, Scotland, on August 8, when the man was reported overboard.

On Friday, August 21, at 7:30 a.m. a passenger stated “a call went out during breakfast for the missing passenger to contact reception urgently,” according to The Sun.
At 8:35 a.m. the coast guard was notified of a man overboard after the search for the man onboard was unsuccessful, according to Perspective Media.
At around 8:55 a.m., local police were notified of the man overboard. A search and rescue operation was then launched with aircraft, lifeboats, a helicopter, and several nearby vessels.
The Ambition did not assist in the search and rescue as it had already arrived at its scheduled stop in Dundee by 9:00 a.m., according to ship tracking data. Passengers reportedly could not disembark the ship until 11:30 a.m.
By Friday evening, Scottish police announced they recovered a body during the search and rescue operation. Scottish police said in a statement, “Formal identification is yet to take place; however, the family of the man who was reported missing has been informed.”
The passenger’s luggage was still onboard and his bed had not been slept in, according to BBC Scotland News, suggesting he had been missing since at least the night before.
Link to No Man Overboard System? No Man Overboard System?
Ambassador Cruise Line announced it would install a man overboard (MOB) detection system on the Ambition in March 2025. By April 2026, Zelim’s ZOE MOB detection system was installed and it passed industry testing standards.
The system reportedly uses cameras and artificial intelligence to automatically detect, track and alert the bridge when someone goes overboard. During testing, the system reportedly had a 98% MOB detection rate.
Sam Mayall, the CEO of Zelim, described the ZOE MOB detection system as “permanently installed” on the Ambition.
MOB systems can save lives. Last summer, a father jumped in the water after his daughter fell through a porthole on the Disney Dream. The ship’s MOB system immediately notified the bridge after the father jumped in and a rescue operation was launched. The heroic father and his daughter were rescued just 19 minutes after they went overboard.
The man on the Ambition was missing for at least an hour before the coast guard was notified.
No reports indicate whether the Ambition‘s ZOE MOB system detected the man going overboard or generated an alert. Ambassador Cruise Line did not mention the MOB system in their statement on the incident.
The statement reads, “Ambassador Cruise Line can confirm that the Captain of Ambition reported a missing person incident earlier this morning. The ship was on passage from Lerwick to Dundee when the alarm was raised after it was found that a guest was not where they were expected to be.”
It continues, “Guests on board have been kept informed of developments by the Captain, and a thorough ship-wide search was carried out on arrival in Dundee. Having initially been asked to remain on board while the search was carried out, guests have now been cleared to disembark.”
